5 Tips When Building A Pergola
- Quality Construction
Ensure that footings are the proper depth and that posts/brackets are set in concrete. Proper connection to the house is critical to guarantee water does not damage your home. - Materials
Use pressure treated lumber if the structure is not going to have a roof covering it. Use high quality roofing materials to ensure a long lasting product. - Climate
In our wet climate roof pitch matters for your pergola if you plan on putting a cover on it. - How Will You Use It
If you plan to use it year round then put a roof on your pergola. If you’d like to train vines up your pergola use pressure treated lumber or cedar for more beauty. When using cedar, and if you plan to train a vine on your pergola, it is often easier to not stain the wood. Staining the wood means you’ll have to reapply every few years to maintain an attractive finish. This can become difficult when there is now a large vine in your way! The natural grey patina cedar develops defends it from the elements. - After Construction Care Considerations
Clean the roof of your pergola after all the leaves have fallen. Keep soil away from the base of your posts. Soil build up holds moisture against the wood and leads to premature rot.
